How to beat those January Blues – with Blow Ltd
The time between Christmas and the warmer spring weather can be difficult, especially when you work full-time and rarely get to venture outside into the light. The glitz of festive parties has long gone, as well as that cosy Christmas feeling, and warm summer nights feel like a lifetime away; it can be hard to keep spirits up. However, January is a time for new beginnings, and I’ve always been a big believer in starting as you mean to go on. I didn’t make any resolutions this year as such, only to start living my life to the full; now that my PhD is officially done, I’m moving on with my life, in style! So here are some of the ways that I’m banishing those winter blues this January…
Dressing to the max
The weather might be cold, but I’m refusing to save anything ‘for best’; when I dress up I always have a much better day, so I’ll be wearing my favourite pieces whatever the weather (though maybe with a few extra layers!). This red Chanel-style Zara jacket was a Christmas present, and as much as I love Christmas, I couldn’t wait for it to be over so I could start wearing this, and it’s my new wardrobe staple! Every girl needs that one item in her wardrobe that she can just put on and feel put-together with minimal effort! Blair Waldorf vibes, no? (And yes, it’s the red version of the blue and grey one that I wore here!)
Treating myself to a blow dry
Nothing boosts your mood like a good hair day, right? I checked out Blow Ltd’s new beauty bar in Debenhams in Manchester city centre, where you can get make-up, nails and a blow dry whilst you shop! I was invited to try their blow dry service and I was so impressed with the job they did! Blow Ltd only use Kerastase shampoo, conditioner and styling products, which left my hair feeling nourished and shiny, and ghd hairdryers and styling tools, the best of the best which really holds throughout the day.
During the blow dry itself, the stylist was thorough with each section and pinned it up to hold each curl before the big reveal at the end. I have naturally super-curly hair, and some stylists struggle to cope, particularly with my frizzy roots; the Blow Ltd stylist took it in her stride and my hair was left bouncy and glamorous and held for the next couple of days – the perfect way to get through those January blues! I’ll definitely be booking in again, the next time I need to inject a bit of glam into my life! You can book appointments via their app here and make sure you’re following on Twitter and Instagram!
Shopping my own wardrobe
More often than not, funds are running a little low in January. Instead of hitting the sales this year, I decided to ‘shop my own wardrobe’. By finding new ways to wear the clothes that are already in my wardrobe, it helps to give my look an update without spending a penny! Here I’m wearing a plain cream silk shirt that has been in my wardrobe for years, but I added a slim black scarf around the neck to give it a chic update and make it feel like I was wearing something brand new.
Looking ahead to holidays and days off
Knowing that you’re back at work with dark days and nights and seemingly no end in sight can make even the most upbeat person feel a down! Make sure you book in some time off work for a holiday, even if it’s a stay-cation watching your favourite films at home, so that you have something to look forward to in the first half of the year. This is ESPECIALLY true if you are doing your PhD (as I know many of my regular readers are) where you may feel guilty taking time away from work, but looking after yourself is such an important part of the process to avoid burn-out.
Fill my calendar with meet-ups
I always find that filling up my weekends with blogger meet-ups or coffee dates with friends gives me something to look forward to at the end of each week and makes the month feel much less dark and depressing! And means I have a reason to stop hibernating, dress up and go out 😉
